Fluanxol - General Information:Flupentixol is an antipsychotic neuroleptic drug. It is a thioxanthene, and therefore closely related to the phenothiazines. Its primary use is as a long acting injection given two or three weekly to people with schizophrenia who have a poor compliance with medication and suffer frequent relapses of illness. It is a D1 and D2 receptor antagonist.
Pharmacology:Fluanxol is an anxiolytic, antidepressive agent and a mood stabilizer. It inhibits the central monoamine receptors, particularly the dopamine D1 and D2 receptors. Therefore, it increases the amount of serotonin and noradrenaline that control mood and thinking, and improves mood.
Fluanxol for patients
Flupenthixol alone or with alcohol may cause blurred vision or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other
activities that may become hazardous because of decreased alertness. Patients should be warned not to drink alcohol while taking
Patients should discuss about the risks of taking Flupenthixol to the fetus and child with the doctors if they are breastfeeding,
pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.
Patients should be advised to use sunscreen and wear protective clothing to avoid sunburn, because flupenthixol can cause your skin to
be more sensitive to sunlight than it is normally.
Flupenthixol may interact with some drugs, like:
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI): MAOI could theoretically affect flupenthixol pharmacodynamics
- Ethanol: Flupenthixol and Ethanol cause additive CNS depression
- Tricyclic antidepressants: Flupenthixol increases the effect of Tricyclic antidepressants
Flupenthixol should not be given to patients who are hypersensitive to the thioxanthenes. It
is also contraindicated in patients who have suspected or diagnosed subcortical brain damage,
blood dyscrasias, pheochromocytoma, liver damage, cerebrovascular or renal insufficiency,
severe cardiovascular disorders. Patients with confusion/agitation should not use Flupenthixol.
Women of childbearing potential or during lactation should discuss with the doctors about the
potential risk of Flupenthixol to the fetus and child.

Mechanism Of Action: Fluanxol is a thioxanthene antipsychotic. The mechanism of action of Fluanxol is not completely understood. Fluanxol is a powerful antagonist of both D1 and D2 dopamine receptors, and an alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist. It's antipsychotic activity is thought to be related to blocks postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the CNS.
